Kris's Closet

Inspired by some great bloggers, my partner and I decided to start our own blog. In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Sunday I found myself in the birthplace of Sarah Jessica Parker. The small city of Nelsonville is known for Nelsonville bricks and Rocky Brands. My guy and I went there to buy boots at Rocky Outdoor Gear Store for work and hiking. I was happy to take a ride to the country especially to a place where one of my fashion icons grew up. After several mullet sightings, lots of flannels and work boots, I wondered where a woman with such style got her inspiration. The town is quiet and there is not much to do during the winter so after shopping we stopped at the former site of Nelsonville Brick Company, now a park called Brick Kiln Park. It wasn't much of a park but the ruins of  the company's former buildings provided a great place to take my photos. This is what I wore.
My pants are JAG low rise skinny printed jeans. My mother bought them for me from Nordstrom online. I could not locate them online.
I have been in a fur mood all this month so I threw on an old fuchsia rabbit fur vest by Express over a button up Halogen shirt from Nordstrom. I found a similar color faux fur vest with a sash online at: http://www.hsn.com/products/iman-platinum-pop-of-color-faux-fur-vest-and-sash-belt/6809985 or this rabbit & raccoon vest at :http://www.ioffer.com/i/2013-women-s-raccoon-fur-shoulder-rabbit-fur-vest-coat-534072938
I am so excited about my new necklace that I bought from Christina who sells Stella & Dot. It is the Lillith Fringe necklace you may have seen many times on her. With fringe being a big trend for spring, I had to have it as well. I got it almost for free after hosting an online trunk show. Check out her online shop at: http://www.stelladot.com/sites/christinajovonn
I love a fedora and it's so appropriate in cold weather. This hat was bought for me for my 29th birthday by my friend Tanika. I found a similar hat on etsy at:
The leather gloves are vintage. I got them at an antique shop in Hocking Hills.
These boots you have seen many times now if you are a Kris's Closet follower, though I hardly ever wear them this way. They are my Guess over-the-knee boots I wore a few times this month on closet posts. I folded them down for a lower boots to show more of my pants.
This concludes another Kris's Closet. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Kris's Closet

Inspired by some great bloggers, my partner and I decided to start our own blog. In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Saturday was February ladies night. Eight ladies met me at Candy Cane Lane Party House for a pole dance lesson. Only one of us had taken a class before so it was quite amusing. We were suppose to wear workout clothing for the lesson which is the only reason I am in leggings. I took these photos at Candy Cane Lane before the class started. At that time I had to remove my Uggs. This is what I wore.
I knew I was going to this pole party all day so when I got dressed this was the outcome. I threw on a pair of leggings I bought off the clearance rack at Kohls last week. I layered a long Mossimo Target beater made to wear as a dress (old) and a Minnie Mouse tee also from Kohls clearance. My sequin over-the-knee Uggs are closet post repeats.
There is a big metallic red bow on Minnie Mouse that attracted me to the shirt. Colored metallics are going to be big for spring.
I was inspired by the shirt to make myself a metallic hair bow as well. I used a gold and black thin scarf.

Valentine's Day weekend Saturday, I went to Cimi's Bistro at Pinnacle for dinner with my guy. Then we saw Identity Theft at the movies theater. This first picture was taken at Cimi's and the rest were taken at home. This is what I wore.
I felt like getting dolled up. So I decided on a look that was preppy meets old Hollywood with a little Pretty Woman with the over-the- knee boots. I love any opportunity to wear red and February is such a red month with Valentine's Day and it being Heart Disease month. My dress is an old Kenneth Cole Reaction sweater dress. It was a thrift store purchase a few years ago. I layered it over a white Charter Club tailored button-up shirt, also a thrift store purchase.
My jacket is a closet repeat. I wore it in my Valentine's Day closet post. It was made by a US fur vendor that I found on ebay many years ago. I bought it for a New Years date around 2006 but I wear it a lot around Valentine's Day mostly. It is red, white and pink rabbit fur. It is reversible but I have never worn it on the leather side because I don't want the hair rubbing off on my clothing.
The pearl brooch on my collar is vintage. I found it thrifting many years ago. The pearl necklace is also second hand from a vintage shop.

The turban, I bought from a seller on etsy for $4 during a sale. Check her out at http://www.etsy.com/shop/ArtsyTreats?ref=search_shop_redirect. The earrings are vintage with twist backs. They were also found at Second Time Around in Attica, Ohio.
The ladybug is by Kenneth Lane. I bought it online on ebay.  The large pearl ring is vintage. It is a closet repeat. I bought it in Attica, Ohio at Second Time Around. My polka dot nails this week are my design. I used Sally Hansen's Raisin The Bar (pearl pink) and Nicka K's Magic (red) as my base colors and a white Miginail Art pen to make polka dots.
The boots are over-the-knee Guess boots from several seasons ago.

This concludes another Kris's Closet. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Thursday's Inspiration

Twice a week Kristin and I both create collections on a site called etsy. On etsy these collections are called treasuries. The reason why I enjoy doing them so much is because I feel like a fashion editor creating a cohesive display of items for a magazine. I am usually inspired by the collections I create either in my own personal life, or through my designs. So I decided, why not blog a little more in depth about the inspiration behind the treasuries I create.

My goal is to not only inspire you the reader, but also take my inspiration to the next level. I hope you enjoy this series as I much as I enjoy creating it!

*Chris*

This week I am inspired by lace. When I think of lace, I seem to always think bridal, or romantic. Well this spring season, designers have put a twist on lace, showing this sheer fabric in bright, bold colors, peek-a-boo sexy accents, and even in jewelry pieces.

Not really into wearing a lot of lace. Try wearing it in accent pieces with jewelry. Stella & Dot has a awesome line inspired by lace.Check out the full lace inspired collection here www.stelladot.com/christinajovonn

View the etsy treasury, in it you will see everything lace, from head pieces to cell phone covers.

Harem Pants

I recently pinned these really cute harem pants to my "style inspiration" board on pinterest. I  thought to myself, I haven't worn these pants since the late 80's when M.C. Hammer made them popular. Well these pants are nothing like "Hammer Pants". The houndstooth and stripe pattern mixing really updates these vintage pants. I instantly envisioned myself wearing them on a spring day with a simple tank or fitted t-shirt.

http://www.shoptiques.com/products/tina-harem-pants?stq_signup=true&stq_rid=r2&source=Pinterest&medium=Hardpin&campaign=type248

Harem pants originated in India, they are a cross between a skirt and skinny jeans. There are many variations, the crotch area is generally loose and baggy, while being fitted from the knee to ankle. As I am sitting here writing, I just remembered that I had a pair of black ecko red harem pants, and I loved them, they got faded out, so I cut the waist band and made a skirt. They were super cute, they are so old, I was unable to find a pic, but now that I have memory, I know what I will be shopping for.

For inspiration I posted pics of stylish fashionista's wearing these "parachute pants", Nicole Richie and Folake Huntoon (3rd picture from the left) who both have great style. If you have not checked out stylepantry, please do so, that is Folake's style blog, it is excellent.

Pictures taken from L-R: www.stylebistro.com,www.mybenjaminbudget.wordpress.com,www.stylepantry.com,www.artfire.com

Justin Bieber was recently spotted wearing these drop crotch pants, along with Jaiden Smith in his leopard print version. What do you think, can men pull these off?

I'm not too fond of Justin's styling in these pants, he looks like he is wearing pajama pants. Jaiden's look is definitely stylish, but I would not want my beau to rock leopard print pants period. Now the unknown gentleman in the middle actually wears them well, the look is masculine and sporty. Not bad!

Would you wear harem pants? Have you ever worn them?

Until Next Time, Ciao!

This Month's Obsession

This Month's Obsession!!!

Often I see a trend or an accessory that takes over my mind. I see it, I fall in love with it and then I obsess about it. Once the feeling hits me, I go into research mode then I must have it, so I buy it. Then I buy it again in three more colors or variations in styles. Yes, if I love it then I need to have options and options. Then soon after, I have moved on to a new love. Today my obsession is...

FUR!!!

Style Icon Photos from left to right: Diane Carroll, Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe, Darlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, Darlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Dorothy Dandrige, Audrey Hepburn

Fur is such a controversial subject. There are people who are such animal lovers that they refuse to wear fur and hate the idea of anyone else wearing it. Then there is the other side, those who love fur and love wearing it. I happen to be a fur lover. It's not that I don't love or appreciate animals and their lives. I am a native Floridian who never quite got use to a real winter. No matter how long I have had to brave the cold Ohio winters, I am still lost without the warmth of a fur hat or coat. I am also a huge fan of fashion and old Hollywood glam. Old Hollywood was about glamour and femininity. It was a time when fur was the norm. Fur was seen as a sign of wealth and style. Fur has always made me think of all the old Hollywood starlets and old movies where a lady looked like a lady. I think about being a small girl in the 80's watching Diane Carroll in episodes of Dynasty. I remember seeing Elizabeth Taylor almost always in furs until the last of her days. I remember looking through library books about style icons as a preteen and learning about icons like Katharine Hepburn and Darlene Dietrich. All of these women became my style icons. They all wore fur and wore it well.

Fur for Spring?
Saint Laurent top left, Prada middle and bottom right, Fendi bottom left and top right

I was kind of surprised to see that fur surfaced in such a big way for Spring 2013. It graced the runways of design houses like Fendi, Prada and Saint Laurent. It got me curious. How do you wear fur when the temperature is warm? I started doing a lot of research and still haven't found an answer I am totally satisfied with but what I gathered I will share with you.

It kind of makes sense that you would wear fur in the spring because it is still kind of cold in the beginning of the season but as summer approaches it gets tricky. What I propose with what I personally know as someone with a decent size fur collection, is to find a few pieces you can wear now until mid-spring. Then you can return to these same pieces the following fall/winter. You can always go faux if you aren't comfortable with the idea of real fur. Now is a great time to find faux coats and vest on sale since the stores are stocked with new spring merchandise. If you would like a real piece but can't afford a new one or maybe you just rather go vintage because of your principles, thrift and antique shops are a great place to find vintage furs. I don't have a lot of money myself, so the only newer furs I have ever purchased have been rabbit. It is the least expensive of the furs and can be found in most coat or leather retailers.

Spring 2013 Fur Accessories

mink purse by Prada, all shoes are by Saint Laurent, tribal necklace by Akong

I can't imagine sitting around in a fur coat or hat in 80 degree temperatures. Whoo!Talk about sweating. Once the temperature changes I suggest incorporating fur into your spring/summer wardrobe using accessories. A purse or shoe with fur trim will keep you on trend without making you uncomfortable. On a cooler day or for evening you may be able to get away with a light fur jacket or fur collar. A fur stole is always great for formal occasions. Another suggestion is a animal tail to hang from the belt loops of a pair of jeans or the strap of your purse.

How I wear my fur

I own a combination of fur coats, jackets and accessories in all three categories but mostly vintage. I received and wore my first two fur coats when I was in high school. I had a silver fox and my favorite was an ivory leather and mink jacket.  They were heirlooms given to me by my gramsey Nolan. I literally wore them until they fell apart. Then I bought my first few rabbit fur jackets in my teens and early twenties. The last rabbit I bought was a red, pink and white jacket( featured above right). Recently my collection has grown by five. I bought a Betsey Johnson faux fur vest (featured above left) at the end of last year at TJ Maxx.  I was given a jacket and two coats including the vintage mink (featured above middle) by my late grandfather's wife. Then I found a great black vintage jacket thrifting a couple months ago. Look for it in a future closet post.

These are the ways I like to wear fur.
How do you like to wear yours?

Thank you for stopping by!

Kris's Closet

Inspired by some great bloggers, my partner and I decided to start our own blog. In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

I had to work on Valentine's Day at Shoetique. I decided to be festive in the spirit of the commercial holiday. I thought maybe it would help me sell more at the store and put people in a good mood. Part of it worked. It got me a breakfast sandwich past breakfast time at one of my favorite delis and people stayed and talked to me for long periods at the boutique, that helped the day go by. When I got off, I made my fella duck for dinner and had a nice evening. This is what I wore.
With it being close to spring, I have been trying to wear my favorite furs while it's still cold out. My outfit was centered around the jacket. I wore my favorite dark denim skinny jeans by Paige from Nordstrom with a white button up I bought from the Ohio Thrift Store.
Find my jeans at: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/paige-skyline-12-skinny-stretch-jeans-twilight/3128824?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=0&pprd=0
I layered the button-up with a pink tank with red hearts (old from Forever 21) and a black vest I have worn before on a closet post from New Years. It is also a thrift store purchase. The vest is INC and laces up the back. I just recently saw it on a personality from Mob Wives. LOL!  The rabbit jacket I ordered about six years ago from a fur vendor on ebay. I love the red, pink and white combination. It is reversible but I have only worn it on the fur side. The faux pearls were given to me by my former boss Delcina.
My bag is the Michael Kors East/West Hamilton Tote from zappos.  The heart two finger ring is from Forever 21. My leather gloves are vintage.
Find my bag here: http://www.zappos.com/michael-michael-kors-hamilton-east-west-satchel-black~2
My boots are old Guess over-the-knee boots. They are originally from Nordstrom.

This week I am inspired by print, more specifically floral print. I used to be pretty opposed to wearing flowers on my clothing, but recently, I have added more pattern to my wardrobe, and want to try pattern mixing with florals. In today's etsy treasury you will see a collection of 16 items all florally inspired, from photographs to head wear.

Pictures taken from L-R: www.typhaniepeterson.com,www.fashionforbreakfast.com,www.fashionsexpert.com,www.hbloom.com

To avoid looking like a bridesmaid, try mixing this romantic print with some studs, different textures or add a little contrast with print. If you are really daring pair up different floral prints in one look!

What do you think? Are you open to wearing florals?

 DemestiksNewYork

A friend emailed me and asked for help finding a dress to wear to a fashion event. She kind of knew what she wanted, but to get a visual I suggested she send me pics of dresses that tickled her fancy. The image I received was color and pattern overload, with a lady like silhouette, I was in awe! When I found out that this dress was easily accessible on etsy, I was even more excited. After perusing through the online boutique, I quickly added this chic designer to my list of "favorites".

The creations are very moderately priced, especially knowing these beautiful pieces are hand sewn, made to order, and high quality. Make sure you check out the shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/DemestiksNewYork! To find more in depth info about Demestiks, I found a great recent article here http://www.designsponge.com/2013/02/interview-reuben-reuel-of-demestiks-new-york.html.

Kris's Closet

Inspired by some great bloggers, my partner and I decided to start our own blog. In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Saturday Christina and I had a styling job with an adorable little girl. We had a great time putting together looks for the little doll for her portfolio. After the work was done we met some friends and grabbed some take-out from Ocean Club. I took these photos at my friend's home. This is what I wore.
I wanted to be comfortable for work and I knew I would be outside some so I made sure to wear jeans and layer up. The floral jeans I am wearing, I have worn on a post once before. I got them at Nordstrom. They are on sale here
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/kut-from-the-kloth-diana-floral-skinny-jeans/3406639?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=2065&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-undefined_6_D
The button up is also from Nordstrom. I layered it with a shawl cardigan. The cardigan is old and I don't remember where I got it.
The headband is the knit turban headband/earwarmer I bought in Amish Country the weekend before last at the Style Adventures feature Queen Anne's Lace. Here is a similar one I found online:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/115788540/chunky-knitted-headband-ear-warmer-with?ref=sr_gallery_35&ga_search_query=black+knit+turban+headband+&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_page=4&ga_search_type=all
The brooch was added to blouse top for decoration. I forget where I bought it.
I like wearing leather gloves with outfits sometimes. This pair I found at a vintage shop. Older gloves are smaller than those that are made today. My hands are very childlike so even small adult gloves are usually too big. So if this is a problem for you as well, go vintage and you can find a better fit. The bracelets I have collected from high school dances and styling projects.
My boots are closet regulars. They are by Chinese Laundry. Here are some similar ones:http://www.chineselaundry.com/chineselaundry/boots/tremendous-leathe?color=cognac

Kris's Closet

Inspired by some great bloggers, my partner and I decided to start our own blog. In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Friday I went to the Columbus Hollywood Casino to see a free En Vogue concert. It was so crowded I left after a quarter of the show and went bar hopping with my fella. We stopped at three bars including a Goth bar on high street. That is where I took my photos. This is what I wore.

A good portion of my outfit is created with repeat garments from closet posts. My jacket is my go to equestrian blazer from Nordstrom.  The cobalt denim, I bought from Shoetique last fall and have worn once on a post. The sequin hoodie is a thrift store purchase. I paid $3 dollars for it.

These are a pair of my favorite earrings. I found them at a place that no longer exists in the Short North. It was called Funky & Functional.

These bracelets I have had a long time. I have always loved black beaded jewelry over rhinestones so I have collected a few black beaded pieces from high school dance looks to styling projects.

I bought this mesh crossbody/clutch in July during my first Style Adventures blog at an antique shop. It reminds me of a Whiting & Davis but this bag was made in China. I love it because it has gold and silver in it, so you can wear it with both metals.

These over-the-knee boots are by Guess. They are about two years old.

My nails are an accessory this week as well. These silver and black foiled nails are stickers. It’s the first time I have used the brand. They are called Nakamichi foil strips. I found them at the Flower Factory for under $2. The metallic stickers are fun and easy to put on if they are your perfect fit. My hands and fingers are tiny so I had to do a lot of resizing. This may be why they started peeling easily.

This concludes another Kris's Closet. Thank you so much for stopping by!
