Style Crush

After a long hiatus, we are proud to re-introduce our "Style Crush" series. I met this fashionista through work, she is a former manager of mine when I worked retail. She went on to better things, becoming store manager for the very trendy "Francesca's Collections". Very recently, she relocated back to her hometown of Marietta,Ohio with her family where she works in  sales. Meet our newest crush!

My take on fashion...

I believe fashion is the one way to really express who you are as a person.  It is what helps you stand out, or "blend in" if that is what you prefer, but what is the fun about "blending in?"  I love when something inspires me and that is what fashion does to me.  I love to check out the usual fashion medias; pinterest, bloggers, magazines, instagram, window shopping, etc.  But my favorite thing to do is collaborate what I see in these medias and tailor it with my personal style.  I would say that my style is a mixture of grunge and bohemian.  Most people I know tell me I would have been a hippy in my former life and I agree with that (minus the drugs).

Where I have been...

I have worked in retail for over 10 years and have recently made a change in my career with working as a sales person for the radio stations in my area.  I loved working with fashion and customer service but I felt it was time to move on from the corporate retail world and start something new.  Once you have a child you really value your time with them and a retail schedule does not really fit with a family life.  I do, however hope to one day open up my own local clothing and music retailer.  What could top working with fashion AND music?!  I have my BA in Psychology and MFA in Fashion Merchandising.  I know it looks like an odd combination but psychology is what helps me really understand people and I want to help anyone that I come into contact with and that starts with understanding who they are as a person.  Obviously my love of fashion is what fueled me to receive my MFA degree.  One thing everyone probably knows about me is that I am an open book and I love to laugh.  You will never know when I am angry because even then, I am laughing.  Yea, I don't get it either?

I am passionate about...

What I am passionate about is easy for summarize in one word; LIFE.  Everything in my life I am passionate about; my family, friends, community, career and people.  I truly believe if you keep a positive attitude on life you will be a happier person.  In today's world it is so easy to get wrapped up in what we don't have; wealth, power, fame, etc.  I like to avoid negativity because what it can do to people.  I do my best to always remain the voice of reason with people in my life, even when they may hate me for it at times.  I want to be a ray of sunshine in someone's day EVERY day.

You can find me...

When I am not working  you can find me and my husband playing with our daughter.  I LOVE music and movies and even though I am not a singer, my car is my stage!  When I am alone in my car I am not afraid to belt out wrong lyrics to a song because I am putting my heart into it LOL.  If I could live my life through movie quotes, I would. I recently moved back to Marietta, Ohio from Columbus, Ohio and hope to get involved in the community. I love when I get the chance to visit downtown Marietta.  It is such a quaint, historical town that has a great local shopping scene.   I recently started a new job with in the radio business and have had a great time discovering new establishments that I never knew existed.  This is very helpful because I love trying new restaurants and finding unique retailers.

Happy Nappy Gal! Going Straight

Going Straight

It will be two years in September that I did my big chop and went natural. Don't worry, I am still very natural and plan to remain that way until my last day. Thursday I decided to get my hair washed, trimmed and flat ironed. It was the first time my hair had been straightened since I started this natural hair journey. I have to say that while I love being natural and realize how versatile it is, once straight I started missing my natural curls immediately. I noticed things that I forgot were an issue in my previous hair life, like needing to pull my hair back during activities like cooking and putting on make-up. I forgot how annoying it is to constantly collect the hair from your glossy lips when the wind blows. Wind is currently not my friend. It has also been quite warm this past few days and long straight hair on your shoulders is just plain hot and not in the good way. While I understand that I am not my hair, thank you India Arie, I feel a little less unique with my straight hair in a world
where most women are wigged, weaved or relaxed. While the only thing between my straight and curly predicament is really just a good douse of water, I am doing my best to hold out because who knows how long it will be before I do this again. While natural curly hair may not be everyone's idea of beauty, I notice that many of us are natural or going natural. We are changing the way we look at ourselves and slowly changing the ideals of those around us. With that said, I can't wait until a full week is over so I can happily embrace my big hair again.

Do you prefer your hair straight or curly?

Be blessed! Be Free! Be Fashionable!
Kris,
