ChristinaKristin Closet Clean Out!!!

As published stylists, we find ourselves sometimes with too many items laying around. We decided it was time we find a way to get rid of some of the items from our style closet and our personal closets as well. We opened Poshmark accounts a while ago to try to rid ourselves of a lot of things. Recently we decided it would be a great idea to start a post highlighting the new pieces we post to Poshmark weekly. We will post this blog series once at the end of each month. We introduce to you our first 'ChristinaKristin Closet Clean Out!'

You have seen us wearing some of these pieces in our Chris's/Kris's Closet posts. We have worn the items with love and some items not at all but now they all need new homes. Here are a few items available right now.

Metallics

This spring metallic pieces are in! They were seen on the runways of Chanel, Lacoste, Loewe and Rag & Bone.  Well, we are getting rid of some metallic items from our closets this month. These items can be found on Poshmark @krisofohio. The live links are attached to the titles.

Fun Fashion Friday

It's 'Fun Fashion Friday'! In these posts I will bring you the playful side of fashion. Fashion doesn't always have to be so serious. I am a big fan of really funky, fun pieces. I admit to loving my fun or bizarre items more than the classic ones; even if some of my friends hate and make fun of them. After all, fashion is about self expression and SHOULD BE fun.

Lisa Turtle Part 2

Lisa Turtle was the character that I related to the most. From a really young age, I knew I loved fashion. Every night in middle school, after homework I polished my nails to match the outfit I was wearing the next day. I planned my outfits for the entire week on Sunday night. I tried not to wear the same outfit twice in a school year. I was so serious about fashion and I was certain I would be a fashion designer. I remember Lisa having that same passion for fashion and we both had our hearts set on FIT. Lisa was always the best dressed girl in the scene, I wanted to be that as well. Her appearance was very important to her but she wasn't just a clothes horse, she had goals. She just wanted to make sure she dressed the part.

A Saved By the Bell Television Moment

Before I get into the looks I curated for Lisa, I wanted to feature a tee I found in an eBay shop. I have featured tees in the entire Fun Fashion Friday Black History Series because I love tees so much. Tees are more than 60% of my wardrobe. I collect tees and wear them almost daily with everything from jeans, printed skirts and blazers. This particular tee features an image of Lisa Turtle from the earlier years of Save by the Bell.

Shop This Tee

Lisa Turtle's style was my favorite character style. She was the most fun and courageous. She was so true to the 80s. She wore color-block and really embraced prints like florals and animal prints. She was very coordinated. Her shoes and belt always matched. She paid attention to the smallest detail. She also incorporated Western pieces into her wardrobe. She wore cowboy boots with dresses and garments with fringe detail.

I created three looks for the character: one look she would have worn to school, a casual look for a day outing and an evening look for a Bayside Highschool dance. All of the items featured were found in the shops of the etsy community. The live links are attached. Shop if you must!

I have worn looks in the past where I see how television characters have impacted my style. I feel like I was channeling Lisa Turtle when I wore this look a few years ago to a festival.

I am sad that our Black History focus, based on Black  television characters, is coming to an end. My  inspiration has been renewed after researching and reliving the moments of these black television characters. I miss the days of positive black television and characters that motivated us to think about things and who strived to attain positive goals. They inspired us to seek education  and encouraged us to  go after our dreams and they did it all dressed to the nines. We love to talk style and fashion but I hope that you got more from the Iconic Style and Fun Fashion Fridays of Black History Month 2016. We look forward to bringing you something just as cool next year.

Iconic Style: Black History Month Edition

Black History month is one of my favorite times to blog. Having the opportunity to write about what excites me most combined with black culture excites me. Iconic Style, will spotlight women who have made a worldwide statement through their style. This month we will feature black women from popular TV sitcoms from the late 80's through early 90's. The women featured gave us more than style, they each had some type of je ne sais quoi. Stay tuned to hear all about how these women positively impacted television.

Lisa Turtle

Saved by the Bell was another one of my favorite childhood TV shows. When the show went off air in 1993 I was in the 8th grade. It was so exciting to see a diverse group of teenagers in high school, it gave me insight on how high school life would be different from middle school. This crew was so cool because they were all different you had your popular cheerleader, the jock, the nerd, the athlete and the fashionista. Of course my eyes were always on Lisa Turtle, for 1 she was the only African American in the lead cast, and 2 she was fashionable. Lisa was known for her love of shopping, being a chatterbox and for always having the latest gossip. While Lisa may have been more into designer labels than anything, there are a few things that we all can take from Lisa.

1. True friendships last. Lisa and most of the crew had been friends since grade school, and then you see them going to college and still being in touch with each other. There's nothing like friends who have known you since day 1.

2. Keep your dating options open.  Now granted Lisa was the only African American at Bayside, she was completely open to dating the boys around her. If her mind was made up on only dating African American boys, she would have been left....single. Of course she was only in high school, but some of us as adults should broaden our horizons when it comes to interracial dating.

3. Have a heart. Screech wooed Lisa for years to no avail. Lisa usually turned him down with insults and jokes. But by senior year she develops a soft spot for him, even attending the Senior prom with Screech on her arm.

4. Perfect your selfie. Lisa was no stranger to knowing her "good side" when taking pictures. We all have to have that one pose and side that will look flawless every time.

5. Be current on the latest fashion trends. It was no secret that Lisa LOVED fashion, and she knew what was in and out. No wonder why she wanted to be a fashion designer, she was a natural.  Take a look at some of Lisa's most popular ensembles.

The inspiration I drew from Lisa looked like this.

Thank you so much for following us in this series. We really enjoyed bringing you fashion and life lessons.

Whitley Gilbert Part 2

We posted a review of the Whitley's Iconic style and life philosophies yesterday. Today I am bringing you a Whitley Gilbert shopping experience. If you ever wanted to dress like the whinny voiced character, I have made it easy for you with a few mostly inexpensive pieces with the help of the etsy community. Whitley Gilbert was the epitome of class and ladylike characteristics. Her style was simple yet sophisticated. I always thought she had such grown up style for the age of her character. She never seemed to be trying to find herself, she just knew what she wanted and liked. She always came across like she knew she was on another level and everyone else needed to elevate themselves.

A Whitley TV Moment

Before I get into my three looks, I have to shout out one of my favorite brands. I know everyone isn't into style enough to want to wear an outfit inspired by a television character but who doesn't love a great tee or sweatshirt.  Accidental Genius Clothing never lets me down. When we started the Iconic Style series for Black History Month, I was pleased to find this sweatshirt on his website. I own the tee, which I have posted at the close of this post. You can find this sweatshirt and many other iconic black women like Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne and Diana Ross.

It is now time to check out the looks I curated. For Whitley I have taken it a step forward. The houndstooth skirt, black top and pearls have been done so many times in blogs, I wanted to come with something different. Instead of creating looks from my head like I did on the previous characters, I took three unexpected photos featured in my Whitley collage to created looks that are very similar to things she wore on the show. I have duplicated the looks as closely as possible using items from etsy. I used the first and second photos from the top.The first look was an example of the two piece suits she wore to class. In the second photo, she turned up the sex appeal to go out. I also wanted to duplicate her casual look featuring a fur coat located at the bottom/middle of the collage. She rarely wore jeans but when she did, she was still so sophisticated like this look wearing a fur coat over her ethnic style vest and henley.

I have never been a two piece suit kind of girl. While Whitley is one of my favorite tv characters from my childhood, her style was and still is a little toned down for me. I wore fur coats like Whitey but it was late middle through high school. At the time wearing fur was considered strange to my peers as it must have been for Whitley's peers seeing her dressed as if she was going into a paying job daily. I was a funkier kind of dresser but I recognize how Whitley Gilbert influenced my style. As a girl originally from the south, I could relate to her and was excited to see her each week. She echoed the things my mother taught me everyday about looking and being the best me I could be.

The look below featuring an Accidental Genius Clothing Whitley Gilbert Bougie tee is from last winter. It was a Kris's Closet Post.

Look for my final Fun Fashion Friday next week! It will feature my all time favorite character who wanted to go to college for the same thing I ended up going to college for, Fashion Design.

Whitley Gilbert

When "A Different World" first aired I was about 7 years old, that would put me in 2nd grade. When the series ended I was around 13 years old in the 8th grade. WOW!!, That's a long time to impact a child's life from first entering into school and then leaving middle school. As a student, I always knew I was going to college there were no other options for me, I attribute this to watching "A Different World" and seeing young people that looked like me in college. For me, watching this show was the only way I saw black people in college, that's pretty groundbreaking. Each character on the show had major personality, and I connected with them in some way, or aspired to have some part of them.  You had your girl next door types, the older students, the girl from the hood, the airheads, the southern belle, and more.

As a little girl growing up in Ohio, I was very engaged in TV, I learned so much just from being  absorbed in television characters. My ideal southern belle came from shows like Designing Women and The Golden Girls (Blanche). But, "A Different World' showed me my first image of an African -American Southern Belle, Ms. Whitley Gilbert. Recently I have been watching episodes of "A Different World", thanks to Netflix. The last episode I watched was when Rudy came to visit Denise at college, and she fell in love with Whitley, even mimicking her actions. I just know that would have been me, if I had the opportunity to meet Whitley. Who wouldn't love all of the lace, the sleep masks, the country accent and all of her stories? There are so many things we can learn from Whitley, here are a few:

1. Stand up for what you believe in.  Season 1 you see an opinionated, snobby and prissy Whitley. Everyone knew that Whitley was saving her purity and that she wasn't having sex with anyone, one episode DWayne was caught sneaking out of her window, and it was assumed that the two were intimate. But Whitley stood up for her beliefs making it very clear that she had never been intimate with anyone and encouraging DWayne to tell the truth.

2. Live according to your own rules. Whitley was infamous for her sayings, they may not have always been true, but they were funny, and some hit home.

" You know what they say about sarcasm, it leads to high blood pressure."

" I would like a man who is educated, enterprising, and ambitious....that type of man is never poor"

3. As you change, your plans change.  When Whitley first entered Hillman her goal was to land a husband, but that changed when she realized her love for art history and elected to stay a fifth year to take business courses. The husband came later.

4. True love will always be there.  After graduation Whitley and DWayne  were engaged, Whitley broke it off after finding out that DWayne went on a date with another woman, but the two soon reunited, and DWayne later declared his love for Whitley while she was at the altar with another man. They lived happily ever after.

5. Dress to the nines.  Whitley's Southern upbringing contributed to her sophisticated style. Even as a 20-something, she was stylish in everything including pajamas. She was sure to  have her pearls, a luxurious scarf, and a power suit.

My look inspired by Whitley!

Stay tuned for our last Iconic Style post next week. The girl I am featuring was the epitome of 80's fashion, with her poufy skirts and curly hair. Can you guess who she is?

Fun Fashion Friday

It's 'Fun Fashion Friday'! In these posts I will bring you the playful side of fashion. Fashion doesn't always have to be so serious. I am a big fan of really funky, fun pieces. I admit to loving my fun or bizarre items more than the classic ones; even if some of my friends hate and make fun of them. After all, fashion is about self expression and SHOULD BE fun.

Hilary Banks Part 2
Yesterday Christina talked about Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Today I add my two scents. In the 90s she was a personal style icon to me. I was in middle school for most of the show but I was very aware of fashion. I was trying my hardest not to wear anything twice in a school year and I mostly succeeded. Those were the days when my mom and I bonded by spending Saturdays shopping for the coming week. It was nothing too expensive, remember Ten Below clothing stores and Lerner New York before it became New York & Company? I remember using her style as inspiration. She and an acquaintance of mine contributed to my love of hats. If you follow me on instagram, I am in a hat in half of my photos. I remember how coordinated Hilary always was. She had a matching hat, handbag and shoes for just about every outfit. She was always shopping. She would come into the house after a serious shopping binge and ask for more money for a new hat.

Hilary Banks Moments On Tees

Wear a moment from the show on your chest from these two online shops! I love Rage On's collage tees and this one is a true homage to the pampered money loving Hilary Banks. She loved spending daddy's money to keep her appearance flawless, making the lipstick, cash and credit card behind her image so appropriate. If this tee is a little busy for you, the Memo Apparel tee with her wearing the cutest cut-out shoulder outfit is the way to go. She is still doing what she does best, "primping".  She is polishing her nails as she shoots off one of her honest but mean girl phrases.

For my true fashionistas, now it's time to shop her style. We know Hilary for her hats but Hilary also loved her color-block looks. In the 90s color-blocking was so in and she wore a lot of it. Her wardrobe was full of suits, sweaters, dresses and hats that featured color-block designs. When she wasn't in full on color-block looks and hats, she was usually going on a date or someplace cool like the Playboy Mansion. She would throw on a little black or red dress and kept it simple by wearing one color.  It is so easy to do that with black but I wondered how she could match a red dress, shoes and a bag so perfectly. That is a skill! Well, maybe not if you have the help of Philip Banks money. Well, I did my best to bring you the most Hilary Banks worthy looks. I curated all three looks using items from the etsy community. Shop if you must or use the looks for inspiration.

Hilary was not afraid of bright colors, in fact she wore a few at a time often. Though some of the looks were a little loud for some people, she was always polished and ladylike. Her style was bold, fun yet feminine. She added ladylike touches like brooches, flowers and pearls. She was also a fan of strappy pumps.

This is a middle school look inspired by Hilary. I was so in love with this violet hat and pants suit as you can see from the cheesy smile on my face. I thought I was Kristin Hilary Banks.

Thank you for checking out today's Fun Fashion Friday! I hope you enjoyed the Hilary Banks looks. Next week we will be posting a new character from Black Television past.
Hint: She was a true class act and had a high pitched little voice.

Iconic Style: Black History Month Edition

Black History month is one of my favorite times to blog. Having the opportunity to write about what excites me most combined with black culture excites me. Hilary Banks

I was so excited when Will Smith got his own TV sitcom in the early 90's. I watched it faithfully singing every word of the intro song, I'm humming it right now. As the show got started we were all mesmerized by this beautiful girl with curly hair who looked flawless every week. What I loved about Hilary's style is she was always so polished, she was on point literally from head to toe with her amazing hats. Hilary was known for her airhead ways, snobbiness and for being self-centered. But there is a silver lining in everyone, right? .
Besides her awesome style, here are things we can learn from Hilary:

1.  Confidence is key. Hilary was obsessed with her physical appearance, but she also believed in herself. Although Hilary was a bit of an airhead, she believed in her abilities so much that she became a weather girl who went on to have her own TV show. She was the true essence of fake it til you make it.

2. Get some standards. This girl would tell any boy to "get lost" in a heartbeat. If you were not what she was looking for she wouldn't deal with you. Can't be mad at her for that.

3. Integrity is important. Being truthful and honest was a way of life for Hilary. Her sincerity came so natural, she would have had to try hard to be fake. Now she may not have always come off as being nice, but she was honest.

4. Family is important. Hilary and Will had two completely different backgrounds, but they both got along so well. Hilary was dedicated to her family, she never left them hanging.

5. Have style. First impressions are everything and Hilary always made sure that she would not be caught looking a mess. When you have personal style, you always look good even on a day off.

My interpretation of Hilary!

Stay tuned for our next Iconic Style series next Thursday. The stylish woman I am spotlighting was the ultimate Southern Bell and always carried herself as such. Can you guess who she is?

Heritage & Home

Decorate with Black History

I celebrate and support black businesses all year round but during Black history month, I absolutely make a point to share my favorite things produced by black business owners. I have been thinking a lot about home furnishing lately and after some research, I  found some cool businesses that produce colorful pieces. Last year I featured one of these businesses for their t-shirts and now they have expanded their art into home accessories. I also want to share a brand that Christina introduced me to recently. Nothing makes me happier than being able to find items made in my image. It is much different than it was when I was a child. There are so many people creating things now and with the world at our fingertips, it is so easy to access the items with the keys of our phones and other computer devises.

 AG On Canvas

I featured Accidental Genius Clothing last Black History Month for their tees, I live in them  daily. I am pleased to reintroduce them to the blog with an emphasis on the home accessories they introduced a few months ago. The same images I love on their tees are now available on throw pillows and as wall art. The images range from historic icons like Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne and our first lady to today's hip hop and neo soul artists. Follow them on Instagram for merchandise updates and sales.

Pardon My Fro

I was introduced to this brand by Christina. She is currently decorating her apartment with some of the art prints. I suddenly wished I lived alone so I could justify decorating with such proud afro-feminine images. Since I live with someone who does not share my design aesthetic or culture, I showcase my pride in my wardrobe. I love to look at her pieces though. The items are so colorful and beautiful. Other than the wall art prints, you can purchase products such as: shower curtains, throw pillows, throw blankets, duvet covers and wall tapestries. My favorite items are the zodiac pillows. You can also purchase totes, if you want to incorporate the images into your wardrobe.

Black History Month is a great time to expose yourself to black history and also to the products that the history has inspired. These products are items that are still very rare in everyday shopping establishments. That is part of what makes them special but also because they cater to a market that is very much ignored in many cases. I am in no way affiliated with either of these companies. I just find it very important to support them because they had an idea that many had before them but they laid the groundwork and made it happen. They did it for themselves but also for me as a black women who doesn't see my image in everyday shopping experiences. Believe it or not, that is important.

Happy Black History Month!
