Style Adventures Vol. 18 (Athens, Georgia)

STYLE ADVENTURES

A few weeks ago I visited Athens, Georgia. I was just there for the night and half of the following day. The small college town has some cool shops located downtown. I fell in love with two really crowded but fun shops that I want to share with you. If you are in the area, these are two places you may just find some stylish gems.

Atomic

260 W Clayton St. Athens, GA 30601
706-316-0130

I started the day with brunch at Heirloom with my girlfriend. Our server was nice enough to offer a list of places to check out in the city. One of the places he suggested was Atomic. The vintage shop is located on Clayton Street in the company of many other shops selling everything from smoking supplies to clothing and bath products. You will also find some interesting bars and restaurants in the area, including a place that specializes in crepes.

Atomic stands out in the area as a place where you can find style and nostalgia. There are racks and stands covered with vintage clothing, shoes and jewelry. They also carry vinyl records, some antiques and housewares. I was so overwhelmed that I made myself focus on accessories. Lately, I have been looking for copper, turquoise and sunglasses. I somehow
remained focused. I came out with a cool pair of vintage sunglasses.

My New Sunnies!!!

A couple blocks up the street I ran across another second hand/vintage shop.

Cillies Clothing
 175 E Clayton St, Athens, GA 30601

On the same street a couple blocks away I ran into Cillies. The second hand shop was just as crowded as the first shop, with clothing, shoes and accessories. Because I was burning up in the jeans and poly-blend Dorothy Dandridge tee that I was wearing. I found  a pretty kaftan that I quickly bought and changed into for relief. I am wearing it in the photos below.

The store is full of fun costume jewelry, vintage items including: clothing, shoes and handbags. For those who aren't into vintage, they sell modern day clothing too. I ran across some designer bags displayed high on the wall fixtures like a Louis Vuitton duffle bag. Need a formal dress? There are a couple of racks to choose from. Need some sports gear? They have a couple racks of that too. There is also some home furnishings and locally handmade items. The best things I spotted were some Asian fabric jackets and a case of turquoise jewelry.

I took my hola hoop and got a little exercise in before I was due to attend a baby shower at one of my favorite bars. One of my favorite bartenders is expecting a little princess in the fall.I got to decorate a bib, ate really good brisket and fawned all over the mom to be. This was yesterday's look.

Yesterday was a crazy busy day. It was also sooo hot and raining on and off. I started my day at the 2x2 Hip-Hop Festival. I watched free style rap, set performances, brake dancing and beat boxing battles. I also stopped by the Jazz & Rib Fest to watch my new favorite band Mistar Anderson perform with Adria Shahid. It was the last day of Columbus Restaurant Week, so I had dinner at Nada in the Arena District. I retuned to the 2x2 Hip Hop Festival for an hour and ended my night at the 2x2 after party. This was Saturday's look.

Her Style---->My Way (Kristin)

Last Friday, we discussed the style of the legendary Lena Horne in our Black History Month Starlet Series. She was always very glamorous, in gowns, furs, hats and with flowers in her hair. It was a challenge trying to find a look that I could emulate. I don't really have any gowns or formal wear. I have not been anywhere where I needed to get dressed formal in a long time. I finally came across a photograph that I could use as inspiration. Using pieces I already owned I copied her look as closely as I could. I accomplished my look by focusing on texture like the fur vest and the knit bag. I pulled those textures into my look with my turban and fur jacket. I also payed attention to the cut of her suit jacket and was able to find a jumper in my closet with that same cut. Since the photo was in black in white, I made a guess with the colors, which I believe are white and chocolate. Today, I wore the look out to my ladies lunch gathering. This is Her Style done My Way.

Kris's Closet

In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them and where I wore them. My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Saturday I took my annual birthday food tour with Columbus Food Adventures. I invited friends to participate in the Worthington Walking Food Tour. This was my fifth year doing one of their tours around my birthday. It has become a delicious tradition. I was joined by friends and family, on the nicest fall day for a walking food tour. We enjoyed cheese, brunch entrees, desserts and a couple adult beverages. We also learned a lot about the history of the Worthington community. As usual, I had a great time!

Vintage Revamp!

I love wearing dresses. They are easy because it's just one garment that I have to worry about. I found the dress at the thrift store and took the hem up because it was very long for my short stature. I used the fabric I removed to create a head-wrap. For fall weather protection, I layered the dress with a fur vest. This was Saturday's look!

Dress: Vintage Thrift Find
Fur & Suede Vest: Thrift find
Belt: Borrowed from my mom
Boots: Chinese Laundry (old)
Headwrap: Scrap from my dress
Sunglasses: Quay
Earrings: Baublebar

Style Adventures Vol.17 (Columbus,Ohio)

STYLE ADVENTURES

After binge watching "The Carrie Diaries", I was so inspired to my spice up my wardrobe, that I went shopping 2 days in a row to my favorite Ohio Thrift Stores. If you are a fashionista you must watch "The Carrie Diaries" just for the amazing 80's style. With the show being fresh on my mind I was zooming around the thrift store putting all types of things in my cart.

Ohio Thrift Store
3551 Cleveland Ave
Columbus, Ohio 43224

I love this location, they have the best vintage items and they are cheap. My biggest finds here are usually accessories.

Ohio Thrift Store
5738 Columbus Sq
Columbus, Ohio 43231

This location is great for finding authentic ethnic pieces, great accessories and furniture.

These sparkly shoes and gloves with the side zipper are so 80's, and the earrings have an ethnic feel.

This African print skirt excited me, I can't wait to wear it this summer.

A Betsey Johnson purse with tags, a like new clutch, and braided belts. My total for everything was $38.75.

If you live in Ohio, be sure to shop at Ohio Thrift Stores the last Wednesday of every month for 50% off of everything excluding furniture. If you are not in Ohio, check with your local thrift stores to find which days you can get the best deals.

Kris's Closet

In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them and where I wore them. My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

Friday I had a free day with my nephew. I have him at the end of the week during the summer. We usually have set plans but occasionally I allow him to decide what he wants to do on the spot. I call it 'Free Day Friday'. We went to see the new Minions movie and stopped at one of our favorite places, Rocket Fizz. From Rocket Fizz we picked up some candy and some sodas for a soda tasting. I usually dress in t-shirts and comfortable shoes when we go on our adventures. This is what I wore.

Kris's Closet

In this blog post you will get a glimpse of pieces in my closet, learn where I found them
 and where I wore them.
My name is Kristin. Welcome to my closet!

I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening of The Beauty Boutique on High, this past Saturday. I was proud to be among so many black business women who are making their mark in Columbus, some of which even dominate their particular markets. This was not just a grand opening. With Women's Day barely in the rear-view, the event was a testament to the the strength and fearlessness women share whether we wear it on our sleeves or it's buried deep within. These women are doing something that can be scary and uncertain but they are DOING IT. They are just following their dreams but they don't realize they are also inspiring those around them. There is room for us all to be happy and successful. With that said, lets support and encourage each other whether it be through patronage, positive reinforcement or both. Happy Belated Women's Day!

For information on the services and products at The Beauty Boutique on High, check out their facebook page.

I took these photos at home before I headed to the event. This was Saturday's look.
