The Story of The Met Gala, From Columbus to New York

August was an exciting month for us. On August 18-20 we went to the Kleibacker Film Festival at the Columbus Museum of Art. The festival is a free fashion film festival held at the art museum each August, where they show fashion documentaries for three days. The first night was the reception, the theme inspired by the past themes of Met Galas. We were excited to challenge ourselves to create looks inspired by the creative themes of Met Gala's past. I went with the most recent theme, this past May 2016,  'Manus x Machina, Fashion in the Age of Technology'. Christina revisited 'Chaos & Couture' from 2013. The opening night's movie was 'First Monday in May', a movie about the 2015 Met Gala. The theme last year was 'China, Through the Looking Glass". The Met Gala where Rihanna wore that gorgeous yellow robe with the train from the gods, that's the one. The documentary takes you behind the scenes of the 2015 Met Gala's planning with Anna Wintour, her staff, and the Met Gala co chairs.

Nine days later, we were making our way to New York for Christina's Birthday getaway with plans to visit the Met to check out 'Manus x Machina' before the exhibit was retired early September. We may never be invited to the Met Gala but believe me, just visiting the show is the next best thing. On the day we visited, August 30th, Christina's Birthday, Anna Wintour was there signing books. Unfortunately we just missed her but the thought that we almost crossed paths was still a little exciting. We were just grateful to have seen, what at least, some of the fuss was about. We drooled over a collection of couture that was covered in beading, feathers, and even drinking straws. We marveled over a dress made out of metal that you would never have to walk in because it moves for you. Imagine that! And of course we took moments to snap a few photos.

Chris's Closet

Thursday night my sister sent me a text saying that my niece had a last minute casting with Gap Kids in NYC the next day. I was so excited for her, I told my sister she has to go, it's a great opportunity and so on. Then my sister says, "Well you have to go with us because you know your way around New York, I'll pay for you." At first I kept telling her no it's too much money for you to pay for me, but after all of her insisting I happily obliged.

Our flight left at 6am, we arrived in NYC at about 7:30 am we took a taxi to the hotel and thank God we were able to check in early. We dropped off our luggage and headed to the nearest diner for food. After getting dressed we headed straight to the casting. My niece wanted to experience the subway, so we took the train part way to the destination and then hopped into a cab (sidenote: NYC cab drivers must be conserving gas because no one wanted to turn the air on, so we were left to ride in hot stuffy taxis!!) my subway skills need some refreshing.

After the casting we walked through Time's Square, my niece took pictures with the costumed cartoon characters, we watched some break dancing, ate lunch and saw a random lady walking around topless. We stopped at Madame Tussaud's, although I have been before they hadn't, and who can resist the wax museum. We had a great time taking pictures with the wax figures, the view of Time's Square was awesome, and my niece ate a funnel cake that was not very good.

We have come to our last New York post. We hope you have enjoyed and been inspired by our trip. It was a great experience and great inspiration. We can't wait for our next opportunity.

 Saturday the 7th, we did the most walking the whole New York trip. We had brunch at Sylvia's, did some shopping and took a stroll in Central Park. It was our last night in New York so we went out that night to the Shrine in Harlem. This is what we wore during the daylight hours.

Since we were walking around Harlem and parts of Manhattan I wanted to be comfortable and stylish,so I opted for this look. We walked so much this day basically from Harlem to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to Central Park, I'm so glad I decided to be comfy

I was super excited about going to Sylvia's and finally checking out Central Park. I have been to New York many times and hadn't checked either place off my list until this recent trip. I was impressed with Sylvia's chicken, red velvet waffles and my peach tree mimosa. Yum! I got so much walking in that day, I know I completely burned the calories from that morning and the night before. I took my photos at Central Park. Check out what I wore!

My look was all about old Hip Hop done in a modern way. I have had this Run DMC tee for many years and never wore it until this trip. My sister tried to steal it because it was in a drawer with the tag still on it and I had to get it back. My vest is a piece you have seen before on my closet posts and it will not be the last time. The skirt is also a piece I have wore before here during the summer with another one of my favorite tees. I completed my modern Hip Hop look with a pair of gold door knockers, a knuckle ring/bracelet, a gold tooth necklace that I think is hilarious and a pair of wedge Adidas.

Christina and I spent our third day in New York sight seeing. We 

checked out of our room at the Roosevelt, left our luggage with the front desk and headed toward Times Square until it was time to check into the next place. We decided to check out Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. We had a great time interacting with the wax figures and I got Christina to eat a real dried roasted cricket. It was a little chilly out so I wore a dress over a tank and jeans for an extra layer. I was going to button it up but decided to wear it as a jacket. I took these photos at the Wax Museum. This is what I wore.

Style Adventures Vol. 13 ( Harlem, New York)

STYLE ADVENTURES 

(Harlem NY 9/7 & 9/8)

This post is about how to add to your wardrobe using antique shops, thrift stores, yard sales and other venues. We travel Ohio and beyond discovering unique and stylish items we want to share and the places we found them.

Christina and I spent our Saturday and Sunday walking down streets like Lenox & 125th. We stopped to marvel at pieces and purchased those we could not walk away from. I love Harlem! There is so much culture and history there. When you walk down the streets you are surrounded by music, interesting people and my favorite thing, STREET VENDORS.
When I come to Harlem I look forward to checking out each vendor's table and stopping in interesting stores. I have personally found some of my favorite pieces on the streets of Harlem and that weekend was no different. Check out the pieces we found and the places we found them.

One of the first things Christina was attracted to was a pair of pink pearl textured spike stud earrings. She bought them for $5. We asked owner Mark if we could take a photo of his stand and he was nice enough to allow us to do so. The intro photo is his as well. Thanks Mark!  He sells handmade and imported jewelry items. 

A little further down the street I found a great pair of wood earrings for myself and a ring made of ceramic and wire. Earrings $10 & Ring $15

Cool Cat

We found a new place that reminded us of a Claires or Icing but better because it catered to our ethnicity and  passions. It was called Cool Cat and housed walls of costume jewelry and accessories. I'd been searching for a decent pair of door knockers and they had the perfect pair for $5. Then Christina ran across some fun knuckle rings that read 'Black Girls Rock!' & 'Natural Girls Rock!' and pointed them out to me. I had a hard time choosing one but I think I made the right decision. Ring $15 Then it broke before I got to wear it. ( Sad Face) I swapped my plain hoops for the door knockers I bought on Saturday. Look for them in a closet post soon.

Celebrities Mobile Boutique

Christina and I have long talked about owning a mobile boutique and while in Harlem, we finally got to go inside one. We were super excited about Celebrities. The store was equipped with an on hand make up artist, tons of accessories and a few clothing items.  The shop was fun and well merchandised but we were tired and overwhelmed already from all of the walking and lack of great planning.  I left the boutique empty handed only to want something I saw the next day. They had a fun pair of large sparkly lipstick studs. We returned the next day only to find an empty space where the truck stood the day before. Christina found the facebook page using her phone and messaged to see where we could find the truck. We received a quick response saying the were not open on Sundays. I was heartbroken at first because we were leaving that same night. Fortunately they offered to ship the earrings to me and all was right in the world again.

My earrings arrived on Friday. I was all smiles and ready to find a great outfit to pair them with. Check them out below.
