Thursday's Inspiration

Twice a week Kristin and I both create collections on a site called etsy. On etsy these collections are called treasuries. The reason why I enjoy doing them so much is because I feel like a fashion editor creating a cohesive display of items for a magazine. I am usually inspired by the collections I create either in my own personal life, or through my designs. So I decided, why not blog a little more in depth about the inspiration behind the treasuries I create.

My goal is to not only inspire you the reader, but also take my inspiration to the next level. I hope you enjoy this series as I much as I enjoy creating it!

This week I am inspired by print, more specifically floral print. I used to be pretty opposed to wearing flowers on my clothing, but recently, I have added more pattern to my wardrobe, and want to try pattern mixing with florals. In today's etsy treasury you will see a collection of 16 items all florally inspired, from photographs to head wear.

To avoid looking like a bridesmaid, try mixing this romantic print with some studs, different textures or add a little contrast with print. If you are really daring pair up different floral prints in one look!

 DemestiksNewYork

A friend emailed me and asked for help finding a dress to wear to a fashion event. She kind of knew what she wanted, but to get a visual I suggested she send me pics of dresses that tickled her fancy. The image I received was color and pattern overload, with a lady like silhouette, I was in awe! When I found out that this dress was easily accessible on etsy, I was even more excited. After perusing through the online boutique, I quickly added this chic designer to my list of "favorites".


The creations are very moderately priced, especially knowing these beautiful pieces are hand sewn,made to order, and high quality. Kris's Closet

Saturday Christina and I had a styling job with an adorable little girl. We had a great time putting together looks for the little doll for her portfolio. After the work was done we met some friends and grabbed some take-out from Ocean Club. I took these photos at my friend's home. This is what I wore.

  I wanted to be comfortable for work and I knew I would be outside some so I made sure to wear jeans and layer up. The floral jeans I am wearing, I have worn on a post once before. I got them at Nordstrom. They are on sale here

The button up is also from Nordstrom. I layered it with a shawl cardigan. The cardigan is old and I don't remember where I got it.

The headband is the knit turban headband/earwarmer I bought in Amish Country the weekend before last at the Style Adventures feature Queen Anne's Lace. Here is a similar one I found online:

The brooch was added to blouse top for decoration. I forget where I bought it.

I like wearing leather gloves with outfits sometimes. This pair I found at a vintage shop. Older gloves are smaller than those that are made today. My hands are very childlike so even small adult gloves are usually too big. So if this is a problem for you as well, go vintage and you can find a better fit. The bracelets I have collected from high school dances and styling projects.

Kris's Closet

Friday I went to the Columbus Hollywood Casino to see a free En Vogue concert. It was so crowded I left after a quarter of the show and went bar hopping with my fella. We stopped at three bars including a Goth bar on high street. That is where I took my photos. This is what I wore.

A good portion of my outfit is created with repeat garments from closet posts. My jacket is my go to equestrian blazer from Nordstrom.  The cobalt denim, I bought from Shoetique last fall and have worn once on a post. The sequin hoodie is a thrift store purchase. I paid $3 dollars for it.

These are a pair of my favorite earrings. I found them at a place that no longer exists in the Short North. It was called Funky & Functional. 

These bracelets I have had a long time. I have always loved black beaded jewelry over rhinestones so I have collected a few black beaded pieces from high school dance looks to styling projects.

I bought this mesh crossbody/clutch in July during my first Style Adventures blog at an antique shop. It reminds me of a Whiting & Davis but this bag was made in China. I love it because it has gold and silver in it, so you can wear it with both metals. 

These over-the-knee boots are by Guess. They are about two years old. 

My nails are an accessory this week as well. These silver and black foiled nails are stickers. It’s the first time I have used the brand. They are called Nakamichi foil strips. I found them at the Flower Factory for under $2. The metallic stickers are fun and easy to put on if they are your perfect fit. My hands and fingers are tiny so I had to do a lot of resizing. This may be why they started peeling easily.

This week I was inspired by denim, something that never goes out of style. But this Spring you may see an overload of it the stores. On the runway, this trend was shown is various ways, from head to toe denim, printed denim, and mix and match denim.  When you wear your denim this spring have fun with it, remember that the denim does not have to match, go ahead and pair that dark denim vest with light wash denim jeans,throw on some jewelry and you're ready to go.

Kris's Closet

I woke up early Saturday and headed to Amish Country. My guy had to pick up supplies and we needed some fun couple time. We had lunch at my favorite Amish restaurant, Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen in Millersburg, Ohio. We went shopping for cheese and baked goods. Then we spent the rest of the day looking for inspiration for furniture at vintage shops and furniture stores for him.We found some items for the furniture store that is possibly opening this month. I also picked up some supplies for jewelry and a few accessories for myself. I wasn't expecting to find a store to highlight for Style Adventures but I did that as well. I took these photos in between shopping. This is what I wore.

It was pretty cold and snowy Saturday as you can see from my snow sprinkled hair in most of my photos. My goal was to put on enough layers that I could forego my coat. After a couple layers of undergarments, that I did!  I wore a Falls Creek brand long sleeve, round neck tee with a paisley like print. I bought it last year at Meijer, yes Meijer. The collar is not attached. I will get to that. My jeans are my favs. They are Paige Skyline Skinny Jeans.

The sweater is also from Meijers, last year. I liked it because it had silver threads running through it. I apologize that this detail can't be seen in any of the pictures.

Now, this collar is a necklace from Forever 21. I bought I online after seeing it on Style Pantry. I wanted to use it as a template when I thought maybe I would make a few of them. I love my pink Russian style Ushanka/Trooper hat. It  is from ebay. It is sooo warm because it is made with fox fur. I also own it in my favorite color, red.

Style Adventures Vol. 10 (Berlin, Ohio)

STYLE ADVENTURES

This post is about how to add to your wardrobe using antique shops, thrift stores, yard sales and other venues. We travel Ohio and beyond discovering unique and stylish items we want to share and the places we found them.

Saturday I spent the day in Amish Country with my guy. We went from city to city eating and shopping for Amish foods.  Afterward we shopped the local vintage and specialty shops. I had no intentions of doing a Style Adventures post but then I came across Queen Anne's Lace. I was originally attracted to the beautiful historic exterior. Then I went inside and was equally intrigued. It is the kind of store that triggered my own desires of owning my own specialty store. It is a place that inspires one to be creative. I thought about all the interior decorating projects I have yet to start and I drooled over accessories I had to convince myself I didn't need.

The store specializes in Victorian Lace. You will also find jewelry, fascinators and Steampunk hats, body products and home furnishings.  There are two floors of merchandise including a baby room full of fun baby items and a room with sale items that included some holiday decor. My favorite floor was the first floor. I found myself browsing the same areas, jewelry and accessories.

With watches being a big accessory item for spring, I found myself staring at a watch display full of sparkly pieces. I had to remind myself that I don't wear watches.

One of my favorite sections of the store was a dress covered in cameo brooches. I have loved cameo pieces since I was a child discovering fashion and the history of it. 

I fell in love with this cameo statement necklace with matching earrings. 

I was inspired by these pieces that brought recycled buttons and jewelry together to create images of floral designs and beautiful vintage dresses. This is green art at it's best.

My favorite room was the hat room. I spent much of my time in the room trying on Steampunk hats and imagining how I would incorporate them into my daily wardrobe. Though I do not participate in the Steampunk culture, anyone who knows me knows I love a funky hat.

The majority of the hats in the store are made by Elsie Massey. I found myself attracted to them all. Her pieces included materials like feathers, lace, fake birds and clock pieces like escape wheels.

My favorite was this top hat covered in lace, feathers and clock pieces.

After making my rounds I made my final selection. I decided on an embellished knit turban headband.
