Spring Trends: What I'm Crushing on Pt 2

Spring has officially arrived, although it's hard to tell when I'm still waking up to snow, weather advisories, and we can't forget the nor'easter blasting the East coast.  I think we're all holding on to the thought that warm weather will appear sooner or later. A week ago I shared part 1 of my favorite spring trends, today I am sharing part 2, including a bonus trend.

4. Statement Straw Hats

Hats can be hard to wear if you have big natural hair like me. I'm feeling this trend because it looks like I can wear these styles, despite my big hair. I see a statement straw hat being added to my beach wardrobe this summer.

5. Pink and Red

Ok, I may be a little biased with this trend, as pink and red are our brand colors. Somehow, I think the universe manifested this trend for Kristin and I. Kristin even wore it when we hung out this past weekend.

6. Shorts

Shorts have never really been my thing. I've always been a little self conscious of my skinny legs, and shorts were never really flattering on me. I like the shorts being shown this season; 1.) they are longer, 2.) they are tailored, and 3.) they are stylish. Who wouldn't want to wear them?

***7. BONUS TREND: Black and White Polka dots

Choosing polka dots as a favorite trend is probably causing me to rebel against my mom, as she HATED polka dots when I was growing up. I never minded them, but was always hesitant to wear them because of her strong aversion to them. The big polka dots shown by Carolina Herrera are more my style versus the tiny dots.

Yesterday I took my nephew to his very first concert. We both love Fall Out Boy. When I saw they were coming to town, I knew I had to take him. The tour also included Wiz Khalifa, Hoodie Allen and a few others I wasn't quite familiar with.  We enjoyed Wiz Khalifa and The Fall Out Boy. The concert was outside, so we left the venue tired with achy feet. The discomfort  was definitely worth it. I took these photos before we left to go to the concert. This was last night's look.

I wanted to do a rocker/pin-up girl look. My inspiration was the Coca Cola pin-up girls from some of their past ads. I made my look slightly grunge with the combat style boots. I like to wear boots or protective shoes to rock concerts sometimes because people literally jump on your feet. I was glad I wore the boots last night. Being short, I get stepped on a lot.

OH CHRISTMAS TREE

With Christmas just a week away, I thought I would share with you one of my decorating projects. Less than two weeks ago I bought and decorated the tree at my parent's home. I have to admit I am a huge fan of color so when my mom asked for a black and white tree, I was a little blah about it but also excited about the challenge. I remembered seeing the Alexander McQueen Fall Collection which happened to be black and white with it's pearl face cages, pearl beaded dresses and accessories. The small Catholicism inspired collection also featured white feathers and metallics like gold and silver. I decided to use the collection as my inspiration in both the literal and non-literal sense. I loved the idea of  faux pearls on the tree. I found some polka-dot ribbon. My mom found pearl and polka-dot bulbs online.  The polka-dots gave the same effect as the pearls in the collection. I selected silver as my metallic and incorporated feathers using bird ornaments I found in store and online. I used other patterns like the bird cage criss-cross on the tree to remind you of the face cages and criss-cross patterns in McQueen's collection. I also added one of my favorite things that is also on trend in fashion this year, animal prints.

DIY!!!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BOW TREE TOPPER!!!

I usually buy a star or some kind of decorative tree topper but this year I had the hardest time finding what I wanted. I envisioned a pearl star but once I found one similar to my ideal piece, It was not the price I had hoped for. I decided to create a bow out of polka-dot ribbon and add pearls to it. Check out the steps to my handmade bow.

What you will need

1. one spool of 6 to 8 ft ribbon

2. thread

3. needle

4. glue gun
5. beaded plastic strands or beads on wire (optional) Find these in the wedding department of craft stores

(you can use a glue gun instead of needle and thread)

1. Start by folding the loose end of ribbon toward the spool to create a loop the size of the bow you desire.
Hold the loop firm as you continue creating loops with the loose ribbon on the spool. Continue this process until the bow is as full as desired while maintaining the loop ends in your hand.

2. Use the needle and thread to sew the loops together where your hand is holding the fullness. Leave space under your hand at the bottom. This will create a sleeve to slide the bow on top of the tree if done correctly.
If you are using the glue gun instead of sewing, glue the folds to one another one by one using dots the size of chocolate chips. Be careful not to burn yourself.

3. Add light weight beading. Squeeze small amounts of glue deep into the folds of the bow and tuck the beaded strands into the glue. Press together slightly to conceal the glue.

I also added pearls inside the sleeve so that pearls would cascade down the tree. If you do this you have to spread the pearl strands out evenly around the tree.

Sunday the 22nd, I was in Lynchburg, Virginia. I'd been there helping my guy out with a job since Wednesday and we were finally able to check out the city. The historic city is full of sites where historical figures from the Civil War lived and fought. We got to check out the Lynchburg Museum, the Monument Terrace/ Confederate Monument,and the Renaissance Pierce Street driving tour which included some famous African Americans such as poet/civil war activist Anne Spencer. I walked through her garden and was attacked by mosquitoes before I could completely cover it. LOL. I took these photos at the Monument Terrace. Check out what I wore!

It's no longer summer and the days have been a little chillier. When fall arrives, it's definitely time to start layering. Looking at this outfit it looks like I am wearing a sweatshirt and skirt but it is actually a sweatshirt over the polka-dot dress I wore on my Put in Bay trip post in August. I added the lace peter-pan collar necklace to the over-sized sweatshirt to kind of dress it up. I love mixing masculine with feminine! I threw on my Adidas sneaker wedges to be cute but comfortable while I trekked around Lynchburg including the 139 steps of the Monument Terrace.

Saturday I spent the day in Put in Bay with my sister and her friend. We rented a golf cart, winery hopped, checked out Perry's Victory Memorial and more. I knew I would be walking a lot and I wanted to be comfortable so I opted for a cotton dress and flat oxfords. I took my photos all over the island. This is what I wore.

I love when I am able to show you pieces that are so easily accessible. This is my second dress in a row from Target. It is by Merona. I am a huge fan of cheap and polka dots. The mint colored belt came with it and normally I would swap it out but I kept it since it matched my oxfords. Find my dress here.

I found some cheap hoop earrings earlier the same day at a flea market that was at a park up the street from where we were staying. I wanted to keep my earrings simple since I was wearing such a bold necklace.

The necklace I have worn once in Kris's Closet. I found it at a thrift store for $8. The bag is an old DKNY bag.

My oxfords are by Cole Haan. They were a gift from my mom. They are the fresh mint patent 'Tompkins' oxford. I love an oxford for denim, slacks and dresses.
