It's 'Fun Fashion Friday'! In these posts I will bring you the playful side of fashion. Fashion doesn't always have to be so serious. I am a big fan of really funky, fun pieces. I admit to loving my fun or bizarre items more than the classic ones; even if some of my friends hate and make fun of them. After all, fashion is about self expression and SHOULD BE fun.

Lisa Turtle Part 2

Lisa Turtle was the character that I related to the most. From a really young age, I knew I loved fashion. Every night in middle school, after homework I polished my nails to match the outfit I was wearing the next day. I planned my outfits for the entire week on Sunday night. I tried not to wear the same outfit twice in a school year. I was so serious about fashion and I was certain I would be a fashion designer. I remember Lisa having that same passion for fashion and we both had our hearts set on FIT. Lisa was always the best dressed girl in the scene, I wanted to be that as well. Her appearance was very important to her but she wasn't just a clothes horse, she had goals. She just wanted to make sure she dressed the part. 

A Saved By the Bell Television Moment 

Before I get into the looks I curated for Lisa, I wanted to feature a tee I found in an eBay shop. I have featured tees in the entire Fun Fashion Friday Black History Series because I love tees so much. Tees are more than 60% of my wardrobe. I collect tees and wear them almost daily with everything from jeans, printed skirts and blazers. This particular tee features an image of Lisa Turtle from the earlier years of Save by the Bell.

Lisa Turtle's style was my favorite character style. She was the most fun and courageous. She was so true to the 80s. She wore color-block and really embraced prints like florals and animal prints. She was very coordinated. Her shoes and belt always matched. She paid attention to the smallest detail. She also incorporated Western pieces into her wardrobe. She wore cowboy boots with dresses and garments with fringe detail. 

I created three looks for the character: one look she would have worn to school, a casual look for a day outing and an evening look for a Bayside Highschool dance. All of the items featured were found in the shops of the etsy community. The live links are attached. Shop if you must!

 I have worn looks in the past where I see how television characters have impacted my style. I feel like I was channeling Lisa Turtle when I wore this look a few years ago to a festival.

 

I am sad that our Black History focus, based on Black  television characters, is coming to an end. My  inspiration has been renewed after researching and reliving the moments of these black television characters. I miss the days of positive black television and characters that motivated us to think about things and who strived to attain positive goals. They inspired us to seek education  and encouraged us to  go after our dreams and they did it all dressed to the nines. We love to talk style and fashion but I hope that you got more from the Iconic Style and Fun Fashion Fridays of Black History Month 2016. We look forward to bringing you something just as cool next year.

Iconic Style: Black History Month Edition

Black History month is one of my favorite times to blog. Having the opportunity to write about what excites me most combined with black culture excites me. Iconic Style, will spotlight women who have made a worldwide statement through their style. This month we will feature black women from popular TV sitcoms from the late 80's through early 90's. The women featured gave us more than style, they each had some type of je ne sais quoi. Stay tuned to hear all about how these women positively impacted television.

Lisa Turtle

Saved by the Bell was another one of my favorite childhood TV shows. When the show went off air in 1993 I was in the 8th grade. It was so exciting to see a diverse group of teenagers in high school, it gave me insight on how high school life would be different from middle school. This crew was so cool because they were all different you had your popular cheerleader, the jock, the nerd, the athlete and the fashionista. Of course my eyes were always on Lisa Turtle, for 1 she was the only African American in the lead cast, and 2 she was fashionable. Lisa was known for her love of shopping, being a chatterbox and for always having the latest gossip. While Lisa may have been more into designer labels than anything, there are a few things that we all can take from Lisa.


1. True friendships last. Lisa and most of the crew had been friends since grade school, and then you see them going to college and still being in touch with each other. There's nothing like friends who have known you since day 1.


2. Keep your dating options open.  Now granted Lisa was the only African American at Bayside, she was completely open to dating the boys around her. If her mind was made up on only dating African American boys, she would have been left....single. Of course she was only in high school, but some of us as adults should broaden our horizons when it comes to interracial dating.

3. Have a heart. Screech wooed Lisa for years to no avail. Lisa usually turned him down with insults and jokes. But by senior year she develops a soft spot for him, even attending the Senior prom with Screech on her arm.

4. Perfect your selfie. Lisa was no stranger to knowing her "good side" when taking pictures. We all have to have that one pose and side that will look flawless every time.

5. Be current on the latest fashion trends. It was no secret that Lisa LOVED fashion, and she knew what was in and out. No wonder why she wanted to be a fashion designer, she was a natural.  Take a look at some of Lisa's most popular ensembles.

Thursday's Inspiration

Twice a week Kristin and I both create collections on a site called etsy. On etsy these collections are called treasuries. The reason why I enjoy doing them so much is because I feel like a fashion editor creating a cohesive display of items for a magazine. I am usually inspired by the collections I create either in my own personal life, or through my designs. So I decided, why not blog a little more in depth about the inspiration behind the treasuries I create.

My goal is to not only inspire you the reader, but also take my inspiration to the next level. I hope you enjoy this series as I much as I enjoy creating it!

This week I was inspired by television. I was obsessed with Sex & The City, and I became a fan of Carrie Diaries after reading the series. So, of course I have been watching the show. I almost forgot how much I love the fun,carefree fashion of the 80's, but the show quickly reminded me of what I've been missing.
